    May 02, 2024 8:41 AM

Some enhancements will be made to the new on-board unit (OBU) for the ERP 2.0 system, said the Land Transport Authority (LTA) on Thursday (May 2).

Motorists will also be given the choice of where they want to install their processing unit and touchscreen display.

LTA's recommendation is for the processing unit to be installed at either the driver's or the front passenger's footwell.

Last week, a TikTok video showing a driver struggling to reach the processing unit placed under the glove box of the passenger seat went viral.

South Korea parliament approves new enquiry into deadly 2022 crowd crush
    May 02, 2024 7:55 AM

SEOUL — South Korea's National Assembly voted on Thursday (May 2) to approve a bill backed by the ruling and opposition parties to launch a fresh probe into the deadly Halloween crowd crush in the capital Seoul in 2022.

A spokesperson for Yoon on Wednesday welcomed the agreement reached between the ruling and opposition parties on the bill as indicating a return to co-operation in politics.

In January, South Korean prosecutors indicted the former head of the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency, charging him with contributing through negligence to the crush.

No senior government figures, including the interior and safety minister, have resigned or been sacked so far over the crush.

Taiwan says may be hard to attend WHO assembly, Blinken offers support
    May 02, 2024 7:46 AM

TAIPEI — It will be hard for Taiwan to attend this year's World Health Organisation annual assembly, and it hopes more countries will support its presence, the island's foreign minister said on Thursday after the United States pressed for an invite.

Taiwan is excluded from most international organisations because of objections by China, which considers the democratically governed island its own territory.

Taiwan attended the World Health Assembly (WHA) as an observer from 2009 to 2016 under the administration of then-President Ma Ying-jeou, who signed landmark trade and tourism agreements with China.

Taiwan, which is allowed to attend some technical WHO meetings, says its exclusion hindered efforts to fight the Covid-19 pandemic.

Ex-Google workers say firings for protesting Israel contract were illegal
    May 02, 2024 6:49 AM

The company last week said that about 20 more workers had been fired for protesting the contract while in the office.

In a statement on Tuesday, Google said the workers' conduct was "completely unacceptable" and made other employees feel threatened and unsafe.

Google has said the Nimbus contract "is not directed at highly sensitive, classified, or military workloads relevant to weapons or intelligence services.".

Zelda Montes, a former Google employee who was arrested during a protest of Project Nimbus, said Google fired workers to suppress organising and send a message to its workforce that dissent would not be tolerated.

Apple set for big sales decline as investors await AI in iPhones
    May 02, 2024 6:39 AM

Analysts on average see iPhone sales, which account for about half of Apple's revenue, falling 10.4 per cent in the first three months of 2024, according to LSEG.

The year-ago iPhone revenue that the 10.4 per cent iPhone sales drop is measured against was unusually high as Apple satisfied pent-up demand after the Covid pandemic, company executives previously noted.

That would be Apple's biggest revenue decline since the December 2022 quarter, when revenue fell 5.5 per cent.

Apple shares closed down 0.6 per cent at US$169.30 on Wednesday.
